Key Concepts

We recognise the importance of key concepts being mapped across our ACE curriculum.  They help us to better understand the nature of the subjects we are teaching, as well as helping our pupils to progress.  As a staff team, we used the ideas of our children and parents to decide which concepts were key to helping our learners understand the progression within each subject, rather than placing the focus only on key skills and knowledge.  We recognise that a combination of knowledge, skills and concepts, which are embedded into each subject’s intent and implementation, is the best way to help pupils progress.  Access to key concepts also allows children to think like a professional in their subject; for example, a pupil thinking like a physicist in physics and an historian in history.  We have also recognised the need to revisit key concepts regularly, so that children can make links to prior learning and organise their understanding into context.

Please take a look at the document below which outlines the key concepts within each unit of work for each subject.
